On My Current Reading List: Pandora Hearts

After seeing it many times, and noticing how cool, Oz, the main character looks on the front cover, I decided to try it out.
Here's the picture in speaking:
See??? Doesn't he just look so awesome!??

The summary:
Oz Vessalius is about to turn fifteen, and as the heir to a prestigious family, he must undergo a coming-of-age ceremony. However, during the ceremony Oz's carefree life changes forever — he's attacked by a group of mysterious people in red cloaks, and they tell him that his very existence is a sin and for that he must be cast into the prison of the Abyss.

But B-Rabbit, one of the Abyss's Chains, comes to save Oz. She tells him her name is Alice, and in order to break free from the Abyss, he makes a contract with her. Once back in his world, Oz is approached by the organization Pandora, and he becomes caught up in the mysteries that surround them.

With the power of B-Rabbit on his side, Oz begins his quest to find out the truth. Why was his existence such a sin that he had to be sent to the Abyss? Why has Alice lost her memories? What happened one hundred years ago when a whole town was dragged into the Abyss? There are many questions unfolding around him, and Oz will have to act quickly if he wants to answer them before his time runs out.

It is simply amazing.
A nice mix of its main psychological thriller theme and good comedy parts. It's almost a horror, but not quite. It also touches on a lot of sentimental subjects and made me cried a couple of times.
The art is also good, and can both fit the comedy and the horror it contains.

There are currently 67 chapters but I'm only on 55... and I don't really want to catch up, but can't stop reading, cause it is just too awesome.

Pandora Hearts is serialised in the same magazine as Kuroshitsuji and Nabari no Ou, two other good series which are quite similar; they all contains supernatural themes, some gruesome scenes, lots of deaths, yet have some light comedy parts to balance out the heaviness.

I repeat. It is simply amazing.
A masterpiece.

Try it out if you don't have anything against corpses or scary looking monsters. Oh, and in the more recent chapters, psycho paths and people's heads getting cut off...

Example of corpses and mass murder scenes:

Example of (not quite) scary looking monsters (plus a shocked-looking Oz):

Example of the psycho path:

Example of people's heads getting cut off:

Here's another creepy one (poor Break :( ):

The premise is always cute though, despite the fact that they're not translated in the more recent chapters:

  1. HAHA time for me to stalk you 8D
Umm I read Pandora Hearts for like 10 chapters and then stopped, it was really, really boring and frankly I don't like Alice in Wonderland themes, so mind spoiling stuff for me? Or maybe tell me if it "gets better" later on :3

    1. LOL :3, although I'm sure you wouldn't want to read posts filled with depression one after the other... :/

Yeah, I don't really like Alice in Wonderland themes either, but that's trivial to meh~!
I dislike Alice, but I just love Oz, Raven, Break, Sharon, etc...

I think things didn't really spice up until Oz reunited with his-little-sister-that-is-older-than-him which ended up in him meeting some other people including getting attacked by the "Baskervilles". (have you gotten that far yet? :P)

Well, if you don't feel like re-trying it, although I recommend that you do, it being one of my favourites, I'll tell you what happens. Although I barely understand half of it since it's all quite complicated and rather confusing (DEEP, it is...). (There was this big BIG BIG twist in the last chapter...)
Look, I once tried reading Naruto after already dropping it once for the sake of my friend. It was so boring and the art isn't my style and I hate Uzumaki Naruto, however I trudged on. I finally dropped it after 50 chapters. It was too boring to waste my precious manga reading time on.
...Then again, that was a weekly series while Pandora Hearts is a monthly. ><
